Was quite pissed off recently, and to tell you the truth, I was pissed off at what I referred to as “spineless characters that walk the corridors of the IIS.” You may be thinking ‘Is he talking about me?’  Can’t answer that question for you, but by the end of this blog you will be able to make up your own conclusion.

Life at the IIS is not too difficult. Sure, there are things that could be made better, but on a whole it’s a nice nice institute...
… And then I remembered my grandfather’s words, when I told him about a problem I had with the owner of this restaurant where I used to work. The owner liked to potter around the kitchen and stick his oar in, telling me how to slice a tomato, flip a burger, zing nachos. My grandfather told me not to worry about it, just nod my head and let it go in one ear and out the other.
Over the last year and a half I have found myself doing the same thing at the IIS. Time and time again something has happened that I’ve not agreed with, and time and time again I’ve sat back and let it happen. At the restaurant I didn’t have a choice because the owner paid my wages. At the IIS it is different; the lecturers give me a grade. In fear of getting a worse grade I’ve lost my voice and become content to just go through the motions. I’ve become institutionalized.
The spineless characters that I refer to include myself. When the lecturer teaches an ESL course, shows incompetence, reads from the book, the list goes on, I didn’t do a thing except bitch about it whilst having a smoke.
Things have changed though, and I’m on a voyage to make the IIS a better place for me, and others who are in the same boat. It may be difficult, and at times choppy, but these turbulent times should end in smooth sailing for future students, and hopefully my remaining studies. When the new term starts, I am ready to rock the boat if/when needed.
No more will I sit passively and endure using a course book that is suitable for a ten-year old.
No more will I watch a lecturer read from the course book for the entire course.
No more will I be scared to speak out in fear that it will affect my grade.
It may not know it yet, but this website has changed the IIS. In future there will be better communication between students and the office staff to ensure that things don’t go amiss, and if they do, things will hopefully be rectified in a timely fashion.
I believe that the students are the backbone of the IIS, and it’s high time that we stand tall and walk with our heads held high, even if we only make baby steps at first.
Thanks for reading.
