Tuesday at School
I jumped into a different class today, EN 492 - Social Criticism in Literature. Oddly, It was not on my schedule I just wanted to take it but when I got to class and looked at the enrollment form, my name was on it.
It looks like it's going to be a great course. It's about "The Harlem Renaissance", African-American writers, painters and musicians come to life era where self-confidence and social criticism influenced the arts in New York City in the 1920s – 1930s.
The class is well managed, organized and challenging. Sometimes I feel really old because I think this is fully interesting stuff, but then again most all of the classes are, but some of the students seem somewhat aloft.
I wonder why it is that some lecturers’ classes seem so out of control with people talking and just disturbing the class. This class was so well behaved and the lecturer didn’t say anything to accomplish this. Perhaps as the students, who basically know each other for over a year now, mature as students they begin to develop a certain chi about them. I like this class I have a feeling that it’s going to be a fun course.
One of the best parts about today was the first work we had to do was to understand all the overtones of a famous speech and apply creative and critical thought processes to understand what the writer actually intended to accomplish with their writing. On a side note, one hundred pages to read by Thursday is going to be difficult for me and I feel bad for some of the Non-native English speakers that I am sure going to have a more difficult time. In addition, I know at least 9 of them if not 30ish of them have 6 hours of lectures tomorrow too.
It looks like a too start to what looked to be a somewhat slow mentally-challenging semester.
